Catherine Chandler is a homicide detective, an intelligent and pragmatic woman who went through a tragedy as a teenager. She witnessed the death of her mother, who was killed by two gunmen. When she was about to be killed, she was rescued by someone or something. Although no one believed her, she knows that it was not an animal that drove the assassins away: it was someone strange and awful – but it was human.
